As geoscientists, we explore Earth, planets, and their moons to understand their makeup, past, and dynamic nature. This encompasses our planet's formation and development, its chemical and physical traits, life's history, and how humans adapt to environmental shifts and natural hazards. A geoscience degree opens doors to diverse career paths across industries, government, and education. Beyond oil, gas, and mining sectors that hire many geoscientists, this qualification equally equips you for roles in environmental services, engineering consultancies, water management, regulatory bodies, federal agencies like the USGS, National Parks, NASA, or teaching positions from K-12 to university level. Progressing to leadership in environmental firms typically requires Professional Geoscientist licensure, demanding 30 geology credit hours - a requirement all Geosciences students fulfill before graduating.
Internships provide hands-on experience, career exploration, and enhanced employability. Through UTSA's Handshake platform, students can browse job postings, internships, and recruitment events. The university's Career Center offers specialized guidance for science majors through its COS career advisor.
The Geosciences B.S. program equips students for professional geoscience roles and advanced academic pursuits, emphasizing core principles and practical skills. Students can specialize in one of four concentrations: General Geology, Earth System and Climate, Environmental Geoscience, or Water Science.
The General Geology track follows conventional curriculum for careers in petroleum/mineral industries, graduate studies in earth and planetary sciences, or research/academia. Graduates gain the academic foundation for state geology licensure, mandatory for environmental management roles in Texas and numerous other states.
