As geoscientists, we explore Earth, planets, and their moons to understand their makeup, past, and dynamic nature. This encompasses our planet's formation and development, its chemical and physical traits, life's history, and how humans adapt to environmental shifts and natural hazards. A geoscience degree opens doors to diverse career paths in industry, government, and education. Beyond traditional fields like oil & gas and mining, graduates find opportunities in environmental sectors, engineering firms, water utilities, regulatory bodies, and federal agencies such as the USGS, National Parks Service, and NASA, as well as teaching roles from K-12 to university levels. Advancing to management in environmental firms typically requires Professional Geoscientist licensure, which our program's 30-hour geology curriculum fulfills before graduation.
Internships offer valuable work exposure, career exploration, and enhanced employability. Through UTSA's Handshake platform, students can discover internships, jobs, and recruitment events. The university's Career Center features dedicated science advisors who guide students across all scientific disciplines.
The Geosciences B.S. program equips students for professional careers or graduate studies, emphasizing fundamental principles and practical skills. Students can specialize in one of four concentrations: General Geology, Earth System and Climate, Environmental Geoscience, or Water Science.
