UTSA's Political Science program covers diverse topics including American government, global affairs, political theory, and legal studies. Students may also opt for a Social Studies specialization, which can be declared post-admission in consultation with an academic advisor.
This curriculum examines power dynamics in social groups, governing structures, and mechanisms designed to foster societal collaboration. Coursework delves into democratic systems, alternative governance models, leadership approaches, NGO impacts on global affairs, opinion formation, constitutional jurisprudence, social media's evolving political role, and philosophical contributions from thinkers like Plato, Machiavelli, Hobbes, and Locke.
Aligned with the College of Liberal and Fine Arts' experiential learning initiative, the department promotes practical application through mentorship programs including internships, independent research, international study, and research practicums. Students may count 3-6 internship credits toward their degree. These supervised professional experiences blend academic theory with practical application, coordinated by the Political Science and Geography Department's internship office. Faculty members supervise and evaluate internship performance, with additional details available from the internship coordinator.
