Geography stands out as a distinctive field that bridges social and natural sciences, examining human interactions with Earth's physical landscapes. If you're intrigued by working with maps, GPS technology, and digital mapping tools such as Google Earth, pursuing a degree in Geography and Environmental Sustainability could be ideal for you.
UTSA's Geography and Environmental Sustainability program immerses students in contemporary geographic studies while fostering community engagement at local, national, and global levels. The curriculum covers climate change physics, weather patterns' impact on flood hazards, and how spatial environments shape human behavior. Students also have the option to specialize in Social Studies, with concentrations selected after admission through academic advising.
This degree equips graduates for professional geography careers, transforming traditional maps into dynamic tools that showcase not only population distribution but also cultural practices and societal perspectives.
Aligned with the College of Liberal and Fine Arts Signature Experience initiative that emphasizes practical application of knowledge, the department promotes enrollment in experiential learning courses including Internships, Independent Studies, Study Abroad programs, and Research Practicums. Students can apply 3-6 credit hours of internship work toward their degree. These supervised professional experiences blend academic theory with real-world practice. The Political Science and Geography Department's internship coordinator manages placements, while faculty members supervise and evaluate student performance. Additional details are available from the internship coordinator.
