UTSA's African American Studies program is an interdisciplinary degree that fosters the examination and appreciation of Black experiences and societies. The Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies emphasizes collaborative, transformative learning where both students and faculty participate in knowledge development. African American Studies (AAS) enhances cultural diversity perspectives across all academic disciplines and career paths. The curriculum equips students with research skills applicable to diverse employment opportunities or advanced academic pursuits. Furthermore, students develop professional insights applicable to numerous sectors including education, business, legal fields, public administration, healthcare, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) industries.
The Department of Race, Ethnicity, Gender, and Sexuality Studies provides Bachelor of Arts degrees in African American Studies, Mexican American Studies, and Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, along with minor options in these fields. The Mexican American Studies B.A. equips graduates for advanced academic work or careers in education, research, community leadership, or advocacy. The department also offers courses that satisfy Core Curriculum requirements, serve as supplementary coursework for other university programs, or function as elective options.
