The PCBH Certificate program serves as a workforce development initiative to prepare future mental health professionals from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) to provide top-tier, evidence-based Integrated Behavioral Health services in the Rio Grande Valley. In line with UTRGV's strategic goal of fostering health and wellness through comprehensive approaches to medical education, training, and research, students from four mental health fields—Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, and Social Work—will gain foundational and advanced training in the evidence-based Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model. These students will collaborate with healthcare trainees and providers as Behavioral Health Consultants during their clinical coursework in Primary Care Clinics across the Rio Grande Valley. The program emphasizes Behavioral Health Consultant Core Competencies, covering Clinical Practice Skills, Practice Management Skills, Consultation Skills, Documentation Skills, Team Performance Skills, and Administrative Skills. Training for PCBH-focused courses and advanced clinical supervision will be conducted through in-person instruction, role-playing, and digital methods such as Mixed-Reality Simulation and virtual asynchronous learning platforms.
