The Department of Physical Therapy provides a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program at the entry level. This intensive 3-year, 9-semester graduate curriculum equips students to become skilled, empathetic licensed practitioners dedicated to enhancing health and mobility throughout South Texas and other regions. Through a combination of classroom instruction and practical training, students acquire expertise in assessing and treating individuals affected by injuries and illnesses spanning various physical therapy specialties, including musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary, and complex multi-system conditions. With support from experienced faculty mentors, learners will refine their assessment abilities, clinical judgment, analytical skills, and evidence-based practice application to navigate today's evolving healthcare landscape.
Clinical proficiency is cultivated through research initiatives, interdisciplinary teamwork, and extensive practical rotations. Upon completion, graduates will possess the competencies to excel in patient care, research, and education settings, quickly emerging as influential professionals in clinical practice, scientific inquiry, and healthcare advocacy. The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) curriculum aligns with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) requirements for doctoral-level programs.
