The Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences provides a graduate program leading to a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology. Graduates meet the requirements for Texas licensure and the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology. The curriculum consists of 97 undergraduate credit hours and 36 graduate credit hours, along with 5-6 semesters of clinical practice. Undergraduate students pursuing this path are classified as Pre-Speech-Language Pathology majors. Those holding a BA/BS in Speech-Language Pathology from another institution may be exempt from pre-professional coursework requirements.

Qualification Requirements

Requirements for admission to the Master of Science degree program in speech-language pathology at The University of Texas at El Paso are based upon a holistic assessment that includes:

Performance on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Grade point average (GPA) in selected upper division classes in speech- language pathology
Letters of recommendation from faculty/health care professionals
An interview
Letter of intent to include professional goals
Admission to the program is competitive and the number admitted each year is based on space availability in the program. Candidates will be considered for admission on a once a year basis.

Students who do not qualify for admission may not enroll in graduate SPLP courses. No graduate courses completed prior to acceptance will count toward a master's degree in speech-language pathology.

If you did not attend high school in the United States and your most recent institution of learning was not located in an English-speaking country, UTEP requires you to provide evidence of English-language proficiency. Minimum score 550 on the paper-based (pBT) TOEFL. Some programs require 600 or better. Minimum score of 79 on the internet-based test (iBT), and minimum of 6.5 on IELTS.
