The Department of Geological Sciences serves as the interdisciplinary hub within the College of Sciences, employing mathematical, physical, chemical, biological, statistical, and computational approaches to solve complex questions about Earth's evolution across time. Our facilities feature advanced computational resources, visualization tools, and experimental laboratories to support cutting-edge research. Many graduate students receive financial support through assistantships in teaching or research. Established in 1914 as UTEP's founding academic unit due to El Paso's distinctive geological location, our department has grown into a nationally prominent research institution with funding from prestigious organizations including NSF, USGS, NASA, DOE, and leading energy companies.
