Before being admitted, students need to finish the Calculus series along with 12 semester hours of upper-level Mathematics courses (3000 or 4000 level). A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for these 12 credit hours. (Bachelor's degree holders who don't meet these criteria must first join UTEP's post-baccalaureate program.)
The Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics (MATM) offers both thesis (recommended) and non-thesis paths. The thesis track involves 24 hours of coursework plus a six-semester-hour thesis in Mathematics Education, whereas the non-thesis option requires 36 hours of coursework. Up to nine (9) of these hours may come from approved upper-level undergraduate classes. Every student must get their course selections approved by the Graduate advisor to ensure proper coverage across Mathematical Sciences disciplines. Non-thesis students are required to complete research and produce a faculty-approved research paper as part of MATH 5396.
