The History PhD program specializes in Borderlands history. Grounded in the concept that borders connect as well as separate, it explores the shared historical narratives between the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. UTEP students directly engage with the intricate social and political dynamics of border life while accessing abundant research resources in both El Paso and Ciudad Ju√°rez. This program equips graduates for academic positions or careers in public history, including museum curation, archival work, heritage conservation, and policy development.
Participants focus on three core areas: U.S.-Mexico Borderlands history, Transnational/World history, and either U.S. history or Mexican/Latin American history. Spanish language proficiency is required, unless another language proves more relevant to a student's specific research focus.
