The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) program focuses on training future physical education instructors for public schools. This concentration aligns with both SHAPE America's national guidelines and Texas' TExES Physical Education EC-12 requirements. These benchmarks demand that participants maintain excellent physical conditioning and demonstrate proficiency in diverse motor abilities. Candidates should enter the program with established fitness levels and sustain them throughout their studies. Additionally, they must exhibit competency in core movement techniques including kicking, throwing, basic gymnastics, and locomotor activities. While opportunities for skill development are provided, students must reach prescribed performance thresholds before beginning their internship. The PETE program mandates acceptance into the College of Education's Educator Preparation Program, satisfactory THEA scores, completion of a Physical Education content exam, and passing the TExES certification test prior to student teaching. The teaching internship involves five full days weekly for one semester in public schools, refining instructional methods. As the capstone experience, this unpaid placement qualifies for financial aid consideration. Ideal for dedicated individuals pursuing physical education instruction, this program leads to a fulfilling yet demanding career path.
