The College of Science provides two bachelor's degree options in forensic science: Forensic Biology and Forensic Chemistry. Students wishing to major in forensic science must maintain a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 and a 2.5 GPA in math and science courses. These demanding programs require at least 86 credit hours of science and math coursework. Forensic science professionals often find employment in crime labs. For instance, forensic biologists typically focus on DNA analysis or advance to medical school to become medical examiners, while forensic chemists examine non-biological trace evidence from crime scenes to identify unknown substances and match samples to known materials.
A master's degree is essential for securing positions in forensic science. While UTEP currently doesn't offer a graduate program specifically in forensic science, pursuing a Biology master's with a DNA analysis focus or a Chemistry master's specializing in gas chromatography and spectrophotometry can lead to forensic laboratory careers. Graduate programs typically require a minimum 3.0 GPA for admission.
