Master the principles of effective writing—structure, discipline, and creative thinking—under the guidance of acclaimed faculty. Collaborate with peers in interactive classroom environments or participate in the student-run Undergraduate Creative Writing Society. As one of the rare Creative Writing programs in the country established as an independent academic department, UTEP's Department of Creative Writing is committed to fostering both intellectual and personal development, cultivating a community of writers and thinkers who will address the needs of the border region for years to come. Whether pursuing a major or minor, students will explore core techniques across multiple writing genres, such as fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and screenwriting. Emphasizing discipline, structure, and creative problem-solving—along with how literature engages with and shapes our world—our graduates are prepared to excel in diverse career paths. While some alumni pursue advanced studies in MFA or PhD programs or embark on writing-focused careers, others have thrived as educators, legal professionals, therapists, medical practitioners, and media specialists. From film and television to public relations, gaming, advertising, journalism, law, science, graphic design, and healthcare—employers across industries seek graduates who can analyze information and craft compelling narratives that help audiences navigate our complex world.
