The communication studies program at UTEP stands out for its innovation, featuring faculty who are prominent figures in journalism, digital media, and cross-cultural communication. The department is also home to the Sam Donaldson Center for Communication Studies, honoring the UTEP graduate and former ABC News anchor. Located in the Cotton Memorial Building on campus, the University of Texas at El Paso's Communication Department was formed in 1984 by combining the Mass Communication Department with the Speech program, previously part of the Speech and Drama Department. The roots of communication education at UTEP trace back to the late 1940s with the founding of the Radio-Television and Journalism Department. Today's curriculum embraces modern advancements, both in theory and technology, that shape the evolving communication discipline.
UTEP's Communication program merges humanistic and practical approaches to the field. Students can specialize in five areas: Communication Studies, Digital Media Production, Organizational and Corporate Communication, Multimedia Journalism, and Media Advertising.
