Students in biological sciences utilize advanced technology to investigate medical fields, including Hispanic cancer disparities at the Border Biomedical Research Center, preparing for careers in medicine, veterinary science, pharmacy, dental studies, or scientific research. The program offers both Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts options, with the latter incorporating language studies and a non-science minor requirement. The Biological Sciences Department operates across two facilities: the Biology Building and the Bioscience Research Building. Administrative offices and approximately 92,500 square feet of research labs, offices, and conference rooms are located in the Bioscience Research Building, while the Biology Building contains around 48,000 square feet dedicated to teaching and research spaces. The department's faculty includes 15 Full Professors, 13 Associate Professors, 9 Assistant Professors, 1 Research Professor, 1 Research Associate Professor, 4 Research Assistant Professors, and 6 Lecturers.
Beyond teaching, faculty members conduct active research in their specialized fields, offering undergraduate students valuable participation opportunities. Research areas span Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Toxicology, Virology, Cancer Biology, Epidemiology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, and Evolutionary Biology. The university's distinctive location—nestled in the Chihuahuan Desert's northern region, along the Rio Grande valley, and adjacent to the U.S.-Mexico border—creates exceptional opportunities for both research and education.
