The doctoral program in speech, language, and hearing sciences provides specialized education and research opportunities for aspiring scientists and academics in this discipline. The curriculum focuses on comprehensive investigations of human communication, examining both normal speech, language, and hearing processes as well as impairments that affect these functions.
PhD candidates collaborate closely with faculty advisors and other professors across the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (BBS) to customize their research projects and coursework according to their specific academic interests. The program explores the biological, neurological, and cognitive foundations of communication while developing strategies for diagnosing, managing, and preventing communication disorders. Key research concentrations involve the neural mechanisms underlying language and auditory processing, advanced evaluation techniques, and cutting-edge therapeutic interventions and assistive technologies for individuals with communication challenges.
The minimum requirement for admission to any doctoral program is an appropriate earned UT Dallas master's degree or its equivalent, with an average of at least B+. Applicants currently enrolled in post baccalaureate study may be admitted on the condition that official documentation confirming the conferral of their master's degree is presented before enrollment at UT Dallas is permitted.
Some departments admit directly to the doctoral program from a bachelor's degree for highly qualified candidates.
