The Department of Physics has been part of UT Dallas since its founding. Its origins trace back to the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies, a research organization established in 1961 by scientists and engineers from Texas Instruments (TI). The department maintains strong connections with TI, as seen in the collaborative design of the 192,000-square-foot Natural Science and Engineering Research Laboratory.
Our department boasts internationally recognized scholars specializing in diverse fields such as space exploration, cosmology, astrophysics, particle physics, nanotechnology, and materials science. Many faculty members collaborate with global research institutions, including work at facilities like the Large Hadron Collider.
