The ORIE program at UT Austin offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, leveraging the insights of our distinguished faculty. Students in both master's and PhD programs gain technical, analytical, and leadership competencies in modeling, risk analysis, data science, computational techniques, and more—equipping them for diverse professional paths.
The Operations Research and Industrial Engineering (ORIE) graduate program within UT Austin's Cockrell School of Engineering has gained national prominence, cultivating an interdisciplinary community where faculty and students collaborate on research with real-world societal impact. Our faculty bridge multiple disciplines, contributing specialized knowledge in applied mathematics, operations research, decision science, control systems, economics, statistics, computer science, and financial engineering.
Fundamentally, ORIE employs diverse analytical approaches to enhance decision-making in complex systems. This discipline bridges human interactions with both natural and engineered systems across various sectors. Rooted in processes and data, it ultimately aims to empower individuals with better decision-making tools.
Most students complete the master's program in 18-27 months. Progress is evaluated after 24 months to facilitate timely graduation. While completing the degree in 18 months requires slightly accelerated coursework, it's entirely feasible—approximately 15% of our students choose this three-semester path rather than the standard four-semester timeline.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
Application deadline: Summer and Fall: Dec. 1; Spring: Oct. 1
