The University of Texas School of Information (iSchool) and the Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) School of Public Affairs jointly provide a dual degree program that awards both a Master of Science in Information Studies (MSInfoStds) and a Master of Public Affairs (MPAff). This integrated curriculum merges in-depth policy analysis with specialized training for careers in information-centric institutions like government offices, libraries, educational institutions, and cultural organizations. Modern sectors increasingly require professionals who possess both policy expertise and technical proficiency in digital information systems. Graduates emerge prepared for roles requiring dual competencies in public administration and information science.
Information professionals now understand that engaging with policy development is essential for achieving organizational objectives. Additionally, while government-held data was traditionally used primarily for internal operations, today's digital landscape has transformed this information into a vital public resource. The economic and societal importance of information continues to expand, creating demand for specialists skilled in both knowledge management and public policy.
Students can complete both degrees concurrently in about three years. Both credentials are conferred upon finishing all required coursework, including the capstone experience.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
