The University of Texas iSchool and Law School provide a combined degree program that awards both a Master of Science in Information Studies (MS) and a Juris Doctor (JD). This interdisciplinary program addresses the growing demand for professionals skilled in both information science and legal studies, equipping them to navigate the evolving challenges of legal information management. Students can complete both degrees in just three years, including one summer session, while meeting all requirements for each program.
UT Austin boasts distinguished programs in both information studies and law, with each school maintaining top rankings in their fields. This creates an ideal environment for students seeking to merge legal expertise with information science knowledge. Typically, five or more JD graduates are enrolled in the iSchool's graduate programs, many participating in its nationally recognized law librarianship program - ranked second in the country by U.S. News & World Report in 2007. Graduates frequently secure positions at prestigious institutions like the Congressional Research Service, Department of Defense, Library of Congress, and various state libraries, where legal and information expertise intersect. The dual degree program specifically prepares students for these specialized career paths.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
