The Playwriting program focuses on nurturing every stage of a writer's journey, starting from the first spark of an idea, progressing through refinement and editing, to final staging and ongoing career advancement. At The University of Texas at Austin, the Master of Fine Arts in Theatre with a playwriting concentration stands as a dynamic, rising program within an innovative and unconventional theater hub. This distinguished three-year curriculum blends intensive training in the technical aspects of playwriting with an open-minded approach to diverse collaborative theater practices.
The program emphasizes cultivating each phase of the creative workflow, beginning with fresh concepts, moving through refinement processes, to final performances and continued artistic development. Specialized classes in creative entrepreneurship, experimental theater, teamwork, and advanced narrative techniques for the stage form the foundation of a curriculum designed to motivate and challenge emerging American theater artists.
Furthermore, the university provides the nation's sole M.F.A. in Theatre (Playwriting) program that includes dedicated instruction, career guidance, and hands-on training in teaching playwriting across both educational and community settings.
