The UT Live Design and Production program builds core competencies in Scenic Design, Costume Design, Costume Technology, Lighting Design, and Integrated Media for Live Performance. This Master of Fine Arts program enables students to cultivate their artistic abilities within a university setting rich in academic offerings, located in Austin's vibrant and culturally diverse environment. Our philosophy holds that theater design education equips artists for creative roles across live performance domains, including film, television, themed entertainment, concerts, events, and exhibitions—anywhere human narratives come to life.
Graduate students in UT Live Design and Production engage in numerous practical experiences while developing fundamental skills across performance design disciplines. The curriculum encompasses theater, dance, opera, film, video, performance art, and solo works. Participants can focus on their primary specialization while experimenting with other areas, while also forming connections with the Department of Radio-Television-Film and the Department of Arts and Entertainment Technologies. Throughout the three-year program, students acquire both managerial and creative entrepreneurship skills to become future project leaders.
Within UT Austin's Live Design and Production program, Costume Design applies theories of dress psychology, emotional expression, and social identity to enhance storytelling. Though costumes have long been essential to performance, recent innovations present fresh creative possibilities for visual narrative. The Costume Design curriculum spans diverse formats including opera, multimedia performances, interactive dance, immersive installations, and traditional theater.
Our design students emerge as the next generation of storytellers and performance creators, using their graduate education to establish themselves as artists shaping cultural evolution.
