Those pursuing careers in energy need comprehensive preparation to assess, measure, track, and mitigate financial risks from fluctuating energy markets, as well as evaluate energy projects and derivatives. The program's foundation rests on two key courses: Financial Strategies-Energy (FIN 394.8) and the energy-focused Financial Risk Management section (FIN 397.4). Together, these courses explore three critical domains through an energy lens: asset appraisal, corporate financial strategies, and risk mitigation. The valuation component focuses on pricing financial instruments and derivative securities, while corporate finance examines funding choices, company valuation, and mergers/acquisitions. The risk management segment analyzes hedging techniques and risk control approaches.
Participants in this specialization also engage in industry seminars covering operational aspects of energy like exploration, production, and logistics. Seasoned energy experts contribute to student growth by leading these seminars and discussing pressing energy finance topics. This concentration benefits from the resources of the Center for Energy Finance Education and Research.
