Social Studies Education emphasizes research, theory, and educator development. Our community examines the complex interpretations of history and civic engagement in American public education. Through coursework and research, students investigate areas like social studies curricula, diversity in education, and enhancing literacy via social studies.
Our degree programs concentrate on urban educational settings, requiring applicants to have or be obtaining three years of teaching experience. These programs aim to deepen educators' awareness of culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms in shaping democratic citizenship education. Participants gain expertise to inspire students and create dynamic lesson plans.
All degree paths mandate a minimum of six semester hours from outside the department. The M.Ed. program allows up to nine upper-division undergraduate credits (allocated as six in Curriculum and Instruction plus three outside, or three in C&I plus six outside). The M.A. program permits up to six upper-division undergraduate credits.
