The Physics Department provides three advanced degree options: an MA in Physics, an MS in Applied Physics, and a PhD in Physics.
At UT Austin, our Physics graduate program delivers outstanding education, equipping students to excel as distinguished researchers, teachers, and industry leaders across academic, government, and corporate environments.
Recognized globally for its research excellence, our department consistently ranks highly in National Research Council assessments of U.S. doctoral programs. Notably, our standing has shown continuous improvement, positioning us to become one of the country's top physics departments. We currently have around 220 graduate students enrolled in our programs.
Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution. A grade point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed.
The minimum scores considered acceptable for admission by the Graduate School are:
TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
