The Religious Studies graduate program at the University of Texas focuses on examining religious phenomena through cultural and historical lenses. Our approach emphasizes research guided by theoretical frameworks and analytical inquiries, utilizing appropriate methodologies. While student research projects don't necessarily require comparative elements, we acknowledge comparison as fundamental to our field, shaping our theoretical perspectives. All students must demonstrate the ability to draw comparisons across traditions, cultures, or regions while mastering relevant theories and developing thorough contextual understanding of their research subjects. This includes proficiency in necessary languages and competence in multiple methodological approaches. Students are encouraged to utilize the extensive theoretical, historical, and linguistic resources available across our department and the wider university.
This concentration enables students to investigate religious traditions within defined historical and cultural settings. The objective involves analyzing how religious expressions manifest historically within specific regions and in relation to other traditions. Students will acquire research techniques tailored to their projects, potentially encompassing historical, philological, comparative, material, and literary methods. They'll also develop theoretical frameworks to formulate research questions and examine religion's societal functions. Each student will gain specialized knowledge of a secondary religious tradition, either within a shared geographical/temporal context or for comparative analysis purposes.
