The Psychology Department unites exceptional faculty, staff, and students at all levels to advance our scientific and educational goals. Fundamentally, Psychology aims to unravel the intricacies of human behavior through multiple lenses - exploring how neural processes shape actions, how mental health conditions and physical ailments influence conduct, and how to create impactful treatments to enhance psychological health. Our research spans from microscopic neuronal activity to wide-ranging cultural and social influences on behavior, covering every dimension in between. As a modern scientific discipline, psychology continuously embraces innovative methodologies, frequently transcending conventional academic divides.
Graduate studies primarily involve specialized courses, seminars, independent reading, and research projects within each student's focus area. All graduate candidates should consult with their area advisor before finalizing their course selections. Certain department-wide requirements exist to ensure students gain comprehensive exposure to psychological disciplines.
The Clinical Psychology Training Program at The University of Texas at Austin follows a clinical science framework. Its principal aim is to equip students for careers in research and academia, with secondary emphasis on clinical practice preparation. The program emphasizes scientific rigor in both research and clinical components, offering exposure to diverse therapeutic approaches while prioritizing evidence-based cognitive behavioral methods. The program holds accreditation from the American Psychological Association (202-336-5979) and the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), and maintains membership in the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science (APCS), a consortium of programs dedicated to excellence in clinical science education.
