Qualification Requirements

Applicants to the PhD program must have a master's degree or anticipate the award of a master's degree prior to the beginning of the fall semester for which you are applying. The master's degree may be in Art History or an area related to your primary focus within Art History. If you do not yet have a master's degree awarded or in progress, you cannot apply to the doctoral program.

Applicants must submit an official transcript from all undergraduate and graduate institutions youve attended, with the exceptions of community or junior colleges that offer no coursework beyond the sophomore year.
The GRE score requirement is waived for Fall 2024 admissions applicants.

Statement of Purpose
Writing Samples - The first writing sample should be the Master's Thesis or chapters of the Master's Thesis. If no thesis or thesis chapters are available, submit a graduate seminar research paper. The second writing sample should be a graduate seminar research paper.
A grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or a comparable GPA in upper-division workjunior- and senior-level coursesand in any graduate work already completed is also required.

IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination
