The Ph.D. program in Historic Preservation advances beyond the Master of Science in Historic Preservation (MSHP) degree, equipping students with specialized training for high-level teaching and research careers. Applicants must hold an MSHP degree to qualify for Ph.D. admission.
The doctoral program mandates at least 21 credit hours of coursework before the comprehensive exam. Candidates must show reading fluency in a second foreign language, as approved by the doctoral committee. This examination assesses broad architectural history knowledge, a primary specialization, and a secondary focus area. After passing, students propose a dissertation topic through a public presentation to the committee, which then forwards their candidacy to the Graduate School Dean. Subsequent stages involve dissertation writing, oral defense, and revisions.
Coursework requirements may adjust based on each student's academic history, research focus, and professional goals. While dissertation completion timelines differ, most candidates finish within two years.
