Students who have earned their M.A. degree in the department and intend to continue with a Ph.D. must apply for the doctoral program in the term after receiving their master's. (Those taking a break after the M.A. should submit their Ph.D. application as soon as they resume studies.) Applicants must submit a Ph.D. Program Admission Request form to the Graduate Studies Steering Committee (GSSC) for review. Individuals joining the department with an external master's degree should confirm their program standing with the Graduate Advisor upon arrival. Direct Ph.D. admits must establish an examination committee within their initial year and follow the same admission process as M.A. students transitioning to the Ph.D. program. Doctoral candidates must finish 18 credit hours, with a minimum of 9 credits in Anthropology core courses. Credits from UT's Anthropology M.A. program apply toward the Ph.D. requirements.
The University of Texas at Austin's Anthropology Department provides an extensive curriculum combining research, instruction, and public outreach, leveraging its foundations in archaeology, linguistic anthropology, biological anthropology, and sociocultural anthropology to navigate today's interconnected, dynamic, and diverse global landscape.
