Students who have earned their M.A. degree in the department and intend to continue with a Ph.D. must apply for the doctoral program in the semester immediately after receiving their master's. (Those taking a break after their M.A. should submit their Ph.D. application as soon as they resume studies.) Applicants must complete a Request for Ph.D. Program Admission form for review by the Graduate Studies Steering Committee (GSSC). Students joining the department with a master's from another institution should verify their program standing with the Graduate Advisor upon arrival. Direct Ph.D. admits must establish an examination committee within their first year and follow the same application process as M.A. students transitioning to the Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. requires 18 credit hours of coursework, with a minimum of 9 credits in Anthropology core classes. Credits from UT's Anthropology M.A. program apply toward the doctoral requirements.
