The Psychology Department at The University of Texas at Austin is committed to advancing psychological science while educating students and the broader community about behavior, cognition, and emotions. Our department brings together exceptional faculty, staff, and students at all levels to pioneer discoveries about mental processes and actions. We actively foster an inclusive atmosphere that values diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.
For undergraduates, we offer comprehensive training in psychology, covering both foundational theories and cutting-edge research on human and animal behavior. Our curriculum teaches students to analyze human behavior through creative, critical lenses—considering factors like gender, culture, and development—while applying psychological concepts to real-world situations. Students gain hands-on experience with research methodologies and statistical analysis, preparing them to assess studies and effectively present their own findings.
With more than 2,350 undergraduate Psychology majors and joint majors, we confer about 570 bachelor's degrees annually. Our graduates typically enter five primary fields: business, social services, healthcare, education, and legal professions. Surveys show 64% of alumni either continue their education or plan to pursue advanced degrees after completing their Psychology undergraduate studies.
Our Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) offers Texas college students immersive research opportunities on UT Austin's campus. This internship program enhances participants' research skills, strengthening their qualifications for elite doctoral programs.
We particularly welcome applications from students in historically underrepresented communities. SURE participants engage fully in research activities, deepening their understanding of psychological science while developing passion for both laboratory and applied research.
