Performance majors undergo professional applied instruction with our artist faculty members. Alongside weekly private lessons, students study music theory and history, join ensembles and chamber groups, and perform public recitals.
Weekly studio classes foster community by offering solo performance chances and discussions on orchestral/operatic excerpts, stage fright, teaching methods, practice techniques, and connecting with audiences. The program features visiting artists, including recent masterclasses by Chicago Symphony's Robert Chen, Grammy-nominated flutist Brandon Patrick George, and Metropolitan Opera regular Rafael Davila (a Butler School graduate). The UT Symphony Orchestra hosts a yearly Concerto Competition where brass, wind, percussion, string, and piano students can audition to perform as soloists during season concerts.
The four-year Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Performance degree combines intensive applied training, ensemble work, and chamber music with thorough music theory and history education. Performance majors also fulfill the university's core academic requirements.
