Performance majors undergo professional applied instruction with our distinguished artist faculty. Alongside weekly private lessons, students study music theory and history, join ensembles and chamber groups, and perform public recitals.
Weekly studio classes foster community while offering solo performance chances and discussions on orchestral/operatic excerpts, stage nerves, teaching methods, practice techniques, and connecting with audiences. The program features visiting artists like Chicago Symphony's Robert Chen, Grammy-nominated flutist Brandon Patrick George, and Metropolitan Opera regular Rafael Davila (a Butler School graduate). The UT Symphony Orchestra's annual Concerto Competition allows brass, wind, percussion, string, and piano students to audition for soloist roles in season performances.
The four-year Bachelor of Music (B.M.) in Performance combines intensive applied training, ensemble work, and chamber music with thorough music theory and history education, while fulfilling university core requirements.
