The Studio Art program provides an immersive educational experience within a supportive community, ideal for those aiming for graduate studies or professional careers in visual arts. Instead of specializing in individual mediums like Painting or Photography, the undergraduate curriculum features two Studio Art degrees, both enabling students to explore coursework spanning five distinct study areas.
In their initial year, Studio Art students are introduced to the department and their major through the First-Year Core Program—a series of required courses that develop foundational technical and conceptual skills, setting the stage for advanced degree work. As students progress, they can experiment with diverse media across the program's five disciplines or concentrate on select areas, advancing from beginner to higher-level courses.
Complementing studio practice, students are urged to attend lectures and seminars featuring guest artists and critics. Seniors also get the chance to contribute to organizing and showcasing their work in an annual public exhibition. The B.F.A. program equips students with the expertise needed to establish a professional artistic practice, fostering independent creation and opportunities like gallery representation, residencies, and grants. Transmedia, an interdisciplinary domain, emphasizes conceptual, experimental, and cutting-edge techniques in time-based art through video, performance, digital, and interactive media. Inherently boundary-pushing, Transmedia challenges traditional categorizations, embracing hybrid methods and critical exploration rooted in aesthetics, art history, theory, and modern discourse. Students in this area are encouraged to integrate varied interests and disciplines, shaping a practice that thrives in studios, public spaces, and beyond.
