The Studio Art program provides an immersive educational experience within a supportive community, ideal for those aiming to advance to graduate studies or establish a professional practice in visual arts. Instead of specializing in individual mediums like Painting or Photography, the undergraduate curriculum features two Studio Art degrees that enable students to explore coursework spanning five distinct disciplines.
In their initial year, Studio Art undergraduates are introduced to the department and their chosen major through the First-Year Core Program—a foundational series of courses that develop essential technical and conceptual skills while preparing them for higher-level degree work. As students progress, they can either sample diverse media across the program's five disciplines or concentrate on select areas, advancing from beginner to specialized courses.
Complementing studio instruction, students are urged to attend lectures and discussions featuring visiting artists and critics. Senior participants get to contribute to organizing and displaying their creations in an annual public exhibition. The B.F.A. program equips students with the expertise needed to develop an independent artistic practice and pursue professional opportunities like gallery representation, artist residencies, and creative grants. Those focusing on Print studies investigate multiple technical, aesthetic, and conceptual methods, gaining proficiency across various printmaking techniques rather than specializing in one. With an emphasis on interdisciplinary creation, students master print fundamentals while innovating beyond traditional boundaries. This discipline hosts the dynamic Guest Artist in Print Program (GAPP), bringing contemporary print artists for week-long residencies where they collaborate with faculty and students on new projects. These visiting artists also deliver public talks and interact with students through studio critiques, workshops, and classroom engagements.
