The Religious Studies Department at the University of Texas at Austin prepares students to become professionals and scholars who understand religion's significant role in shaping societies and cultures throughout history and today. Our courses employ diverse methodologies to examine religion, analyzing ritual practices and sacred texts, tracing religious origins, and studying how faith intersects with political, social, cultural, and economic systems. The interdisciplinary nature of our program gives students exceptional opportunities to learn from distinguished faculty both within our department and across other disciplines. Whether examining modern religious movements or ancient spiritual traditions, our students gain valuable skills in critical analysis, effective communication, and cultural understanding that benefit them in diverse career paths. Since launching the Religious Studies major in Fall 2000, our graduates have pursued successful careers in healthcare, law, public service, education, finance, and international organizations, while others have continued their studies at prestigious institutions like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia.
Religious Studies majors develop strong foundations for careers in government agencies, healthcare fields, military service, media, social work, and higher education. Our alumni hold positions as policy advisors, entrepreneurs, religious leaders, legal professionals, and educators. Many have pursued advanced degrees in business, medicine, law, social sciences, and religious studies.
