The Department of Spanish and Portuguese fosters comprehensive engagement with the diverse cultures we study, spanning from their origins in the Iberian Peninsula and the Americas to their contemporary expressions across Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
Our department delivers a rigorous, thoughtfully structured curriculum informed by faculty research, serving both undergraduate and graduate students. As a key component of UT's College of Liberal Arts, our program helps students cultivate an understanding of languages, literatures, and cultures while building foundational skills in critical analysis, writing, and verbal communication in Spanish and Portuguese. Faculty members also enhance undergraduate education through the School of Undergraduate Studies, particularly via involvement in Signature Courses and interdisciplinary programs like Bridging Disciplines, which includes studies in Film, Human Rights, Social Justice, and Cultural Studies.
Graduate programs play a vital role in advancing our academic goals. In addition to coursework, graduate students engage in activities such as organizing annual conferences, contributing to literary journals, and participating in poetry readings. Workshops prepare them for academic careers, covering conference presentations, publishing, and grant applications. The Graduate Student Organization (GSO) enables them to support peers, contribute to university initiatives, and help shape the program's future.
