The faculty and staff in the Department of French and Italian deliver and facilitate cutting-edge, top-tier instruction that addresses students' academic requirements and passions through programs in teaching methods, language education, literary analysis, and cultural research. The department features pioneering digital tools like Franais Interactif and Tex's French Grammar.
Undergraduates can pursue bachelor's degrees in French Studies or Italian Studies. For graduate students, the department provides three specialized pathways culminating in doctoral degrees in French Studies, French Linguistics, and Italian Studies. Department offices are situated in Homer Rainey Hall (HRH) on 21st Street, nestled between the Harry Ransom Center and Benedict Hall. Originally constructed as the UT Music Building, the structure was later renamed to commemorate former university president Homer Rainey (1939-1944). This distinctive 1950s Spanish Colonial-style building is jointly occupied by the Jessen Auditorium and The Center for Middle Eastern Studies.
