The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies (AADS), alongside the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies and the Institute for Urban Policy, Research, and Analysis, focuses on examining the intellectual, political, artistic, and social histories of African-descended communities across Africa and the global diaspora, including the U.S.
AADS students collaborate with renowned UT faculty, staff, and peers to explore themes of race, gender, sexuality, social class, and transnational Black identity. The curriculum covers varied subjects including cultural anthropology, diaspora studies (with emphasis on Latin America), educational systems, Black feminist thought, public health, identity formation, legal systems, political structures, creative arts, literary works, musical traditions, performance studies, queer theory, activism, and the sociology of sports.
