The Master of Arts in History program caters to diverse student backgrounds and professional aspirations. Our department provides graduate-level courses spanning numerous subjects and regions, with special emphasis on U.S., European, and Latin American studies, along with borderlands, transatlantic, and transnational historical perspectives. This degree equips graduates for careers in public history, teaching, or any field demanding strong research, analytical, and writing abilities. Beyond conventional seminars and colloquia that enhance research and writing skills across various historical periods and locations, we offer specialized certificates in archival management and public history. Additional opportunities include workshops and courses focused on community college instruction, digital humanities, and geographic information systems (GIS). Full-time students (enrolled in nine credit hours per semester) can finish the program within two years.
Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (as calculated by Graduate Admissions) in the last 60 credit hours in the course of completing a B.A. degree in History (or an appropriate other field) from an accredited institution (verified by official transcripts from each college or university previously attended sent directly from the registrar of that institution to Graduate Admissions).
A writing sample, sent to the Graduate Advisor. The Department prefers that applicants send a research paper written in an upper-division history course, but other examples are acceptable. The essay should demonstrate the applicant's writing, research, and analytical skills where possible. There is not a specific page minimum, but papers should not be over 25 pages.
Three letters of recommendation (from faculty if possible) mailed directly from the recommenders to the History Graduate Advisor.
A minimum score of 153 on the verbal section and a minimum score of 4 on the analytical writing section of the GRE aptitude test (verified by official GRE scores sent to Graduate Admissions). However, standardized test performance is not the sole criterion for admission or the primary criterion to end consideration for admission.
UTA graduates who completed their B.A. with a grade point average of 3.3 or higher may be eligible to waive some admissions requirements including the GRE exam.
For IELTS, we require a minimum score of 6.5.
TOEFL internet-based- 79 (with sectional scores of 22 writing, 21 speaking, 20 reading, or 16 listening)
Duolingo, we require a minimum score of 100.
