The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is a dynamic, emerging academic unit with 20 tenured and tenure-track professors mentoring more than 90 full-time graduate students, over 20 postdoctoral researchers and visiting scholars, plus numerous undergraduates gaining hands-on research experience at an advanced scientific level. Our faculty lead innovative research initiatives spanning analytical, organic, biochemical, physical, and inorganic chemistry, with most projects bridging conventional disciplinary lines. The department boasts cutting-edge facilities supporting premier research across both traditional and interdisciplinary chemical sciences. The Bachelor of Applied Biological Sciences in chemistry offers comprehensive chemical training with extensive laboratory work in analytical and organic chemistry. Chemistry majors gain proficiency with modern instrumentation and synthesis techniques while developing essential career competencies including analytical reasoning, effective communication, and teamwork. We suggest the Bachelor of Science in chemistry for students aiming for graduate studies or industrial chemistry careers. Those interested in secondary education chemistry instruction may pursue the Bachelor of Arts in chemistry.
Students must have completed official secondary school transcripts, diplomas, certificates and/or national test examination scores as appropriate for the educational systems in their country. In order to be considered for freshman admission students must have completed secondary school studies equivalent to that of United States high school graduation.
Official SAT I or ACT scores are required for entering freshmen with less than 24 semester hours of university level course work (equivalent to one year of full time study).
The minimum acceptable score on the TOEFL is 79 on the Internet-based test, 550 on the paper-based test and 213 on the computer-based test. The IELTS can be substituted for TOEFL scores. The minimum acceptable overall score of 6.5 is required for admission.
