Examining history reveals the fundamental influences that have molded human civilization, offering insights to address current issues and future challenges. Understanding our cultural legacy fosters a stronger sense of self. Historical research also lays the essential groundwork for exploring other fields including economics, literature, art, linguistics, and both social and natural sciences.
Those who study history cultivate crucial analytical abilities characteristic of educated individuals: skills in logical reasoning, problem-solving, integrating varied information, and articulating thoughts or facts with clarity. The History Department promotes a curious, critical approach to humanity's varied experiences and perspectives. Recognizing cultural distinctions among different societies yields deeper understanding of global civilization's core themes. History students learn to read with discernment, speak persuasively, and write logically.
Students must have completed official secondary school transcripts, diplomas, certificates and/or national test examination scores as appropriate for the educational systems in their country. In order to be considered for freshman admission students must have completed secondary school studies equivalent to that of United States high school graduation.
The minimum acceptable score on the TOEFL is 79 on the Internet-based test, 550 on the paper-based test and 213 on the computer-based test. The IELTS can be substituted for TOEFL scores. The minimum acceptable overall score of 6.5 is required for admission. Scores must be sent directly to UT Arlington from the Testing Service to be considered official.
