Civil engineering's primary objectives in the next ten years will focus on delivering design expertise, construction methodologies, and resource management for infrastructure development. As a construction engineer, you'll contribute to an industry that transforms advanced design concepts into operational societal infrastructure. Available at the Knoxville campus. Nearly all civil engineering endeavors depend on utilizing the earth's materials to create the necessary building components for foundational structures. Geotechnical engineers play a crucial role in subsurface exploration and soil analysis, forming the bedrock of foundation planning. Their work encompasses designing various foundation types, assessing slope stability, preventing rockfalls, and developing dams, tunnels, and levees. Materials engineers require in-depth knowledge of construction and structural materials to ensure resource-efficient designs. The geotechnical and materials engineering graduate program provides diverse study areas, with students encouraged to expand their knowledge through mechanics, structures, and geology courses. Offered both on-campus in Knoxville and through distance learning.
