The College of Law and The College of Social Work provide a joint graduate program in social work and legal studies, allowing students to earn both a Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) and a Master of Legal Studies (MLSD). This dual-degree initiative enables those passionate about social work and law to complete both programs in just two academic years (including summers), compared to the three years required if pursued independently.
The curriculum is carefully structured for individuals aiming to develop expertise in both fields. The MSSW program equips graduates to enhance the well-being of vulnerable populations, including individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, and broader regions like Tennessee, the nation, and beyond. Meanwhile, the MLSD program caters to professionals whose work intersects with legal matters but who do not intend to pursue a JD or practice law.
Emphasizing an interdisciplinary perspective, the program fosters teamwork and effective communication. Graduates of this dual-degree program at The University of Tennessee pursue diverse careers, such as social workers, program administrators, and mental health professionals.
Prospective students must apply separately to both colleges. After gaining admission to both, candidates will be evaluated for the program by a joint admissions committee with representatives from each institution.
