The PhD program cultivates students' capacity for conducting autonomous, innovative research in microbiology and related disciplines. It emphasizes developing skills for effectively communicating research findings both verbally and in writing to the scientific community, while also preparing students to become skilled educators. Applicants can join the program with either an undergraduate or graduate degree. Typically, bachelor's degree holders complete their PhD in four to five years, while those entering with a master's degree generally finish within three to four years.

Qualification Requirements

Students are expected to have completed an undergraduate program with a 3.00 or better GPA on a 4.00 system.
Included in the undergraduate course credits should be
a full year of general biological science,
one year of calculus,
two years of chemistry, including one year of organic,
one year of physics, and
an introductory course in microbiology.
In many cases, deficiencies in requirements may be removed by taking appropriate courses during the first year of graduate study.
Three letters of recommendation should be submitted by current or former faculty members.
Optional (not required) the general portion of the Graduate Record Examination.


Minimum score requirements for admission to the Graduate School are:
a total score of 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT),
a total score of 550 or equivalent on the paper-based TOEFL (PBT), or
a 6.5 overall band score on the IELTS.
