Initially, the industrial engineering field concentrated on manufacturing. Modern industrial engineers participate in developing systems and processes to create and distribute goods and services across manufacturing, service industries, and government sectors. They focus on designing integrated systems that incorporate people, materials, finances, equipment, processes, energy, and information to ensure efficient overall operation and the adequate fulfillment of human needs. Industrial engineering stands out in two key ways - it typically addresses issues or systems where human beings are a central factor, and its practitioners are inherently systems engineers with a versatile skill set applicable to diverse work settings. This focus on people, science, and technology sets industrial engineering apart from other engineering fields. The goal of industrial engineers is to attain optimal outcomes for humanity in safety, quality, and productivity. They generate value by employing a comprehensive systems perspective, scientific methodology, engineering design, and the integration of emerging technologies. Like all engineering disciplines, industrial engineering relies on mathematics and the physical sciences, but it also places significant emphasis on the life and social sciences. This attention to the human aspect results in system designs that improve the quality of life for everyone, both as creators and users of products and services.
