The Department of Microbiology at the University of Tennessee Knoxville is committed to delivering excellent education through innovative teaching and groundbreaking research to address the evolving demands of this dynamic discipline. Our faculty actively engage in scientific investigations across diverse specialties including immunology, virology, microbial ecology, pathology, microbial genetics, and more. These research initiatives receive ongoing support through partnerships with leading organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and NASA. Undergraduate researchers acquire hands-on laboratory experience by assisting faculty members, while graduate students collaborate closely with professors, frequently co-authoring publications based on their joint research. Studies may concentrate on significant topics like herpesvirus or coronavirus investigations, examining viral effects on aquatic ecosystems, or analyzing genetic sequences in disease-causing fungi.
