The College of Music's primary goal is to deliver exceptional training in musical disciplines while fostering innovation and scholarly work across composition, education, musicology, pedagogy, performance, and theory. Through this mission, the college enhances the musical and academic experiences of its students, the broader university population, and Tennessee residents. Prospective music students (both freshmen and transfers) are required to complete an applied music audition and theory assessment. Those aiming to specialize in music education, musicology, or music theory/composition must additionally conduct a faculty interview in their chosen field. Official music major status is only granted after successful completion of the audition and, where relevant, the interview. A theory placement test is also administered, with combined results influencing course placement in both applied music and theory. These evaluations should ideally occur during a campus visit before the start of classes. Prospective students are strongly encouraged to arrange these assessments with the College of Music well in advance, preferably before summer orientation. Music education candidates follow identical audition protocols as performance majors. Following their second year or upon finishing prerequisite coursework, students undergo an interview with the Admissions Board. Successful candidates gain entry to the Teacher Education Program and access to advanced education courses. Music education students must adhere to all policies set by the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences' Teacher Education Program, despite receiving their degree from the College of Arts and Sciences.
